The best way is to email Matt and let him know when you are coming to Maui! He will ask you to fill out a form to assess your level and make some suggestions on best times and locations to hit the water.
If you are considering doing a lesson, stop thinking and just do it. You will thank yourself afterwards. Windsurfing is a difficult sport and a few tips to make it easier can save you years of hitting the same brick wall!
A private session of on land and water training. Matt follows you around and is with you every step of the way. He captures a video with his GO PRO helmet cam so you can see what you are doing right and wrong.
This is one of the greatest learning tools available.
When you see what you are doing, it becomes very clear…. You might think you are looking where you are going, but you are checking out your toes in the middle of your jibe!
– Says Matt about capturing his lessons with his GO-PRO helmet cam.
When you are ready to up your game and make your life on the water EASIER and MORE FUN, now is the time. Matt has been teaching for the past 10 years and has an impressive success rate! No matter what level you are at, Matt knows the tricks to get you on the water and progressing instantly.
While recently on Maui, I was able to schedule a private lesson with Matt through HST. A few years ago, I had taken a wave sailing clinic with him and learned a ton, so I knew a private lesson would be great. We started off my lesson intending to work on one set of tricks and he quickly determined I needed instruction on some of the more fundamental building blocks, which once mastered, would make the more complicated tricks much easier. This has been hugely helpful in my overall sailing. In general, I think Matt has a unique ability to help breakdown the complexity of tricks so that mere mortals can begin to figure them out. I highly recommend his clinics and private lessons to anyone trying break into new maneuvers and improve your sailing.
Hi Matt, wanted to thank you for the really awesome time in Maui this year. The skills I learnt form you were fantastic. Given the small (alright LARGE) difference in ability I was wrapped that you could interpret what I would be able to learn in the timeframe and did so with such a down to earth approach. You were right – the whole loop thing isn’t bad once your head allows you to do it. Pity the body got caned in the process. Thanks again I’ll see you next year… Regards
I got taken down by an overhead to mast high wave far from shore, with my gear way downwind. I swam, but no use and got really tired. Out of nowhere, I hear Matt’s voice “I got you! Don’t panic”. Matt is an awesome instructor, very creative, fun, supportive, and laid back. Best of all, he’s an inspiration. How often could you ride waves with a world pro upwind giving you instruction, or downwind asking you to follow him? And while you take breaks on the beach, he’ll demonstrate his talents on the water. It’s one of the best shows ever!!!
The day was outrageously unexpected and is now on the highlight real of my life. Thank you for your time, your expertise, and your general awesomeness!
Matt, I landed a proper clean backloop thanks to you!! Unreal!!! Thank you so much. I can’t believe that all it took was about 10-15 tries after your tip of staying more compact in the air. I also moved my backhand even further back on the boom as suggested. In retrospect my body position was completely wrong for the last 10 years. I have met and asked many pro sailors, but nobody has ever been able to articulate what to do in the same precise and “to-the-point” manner as you have.
I’ve been reveling in this last trip nonstop since returning home.Thank you for all that you do for windsurfing. You should get some ultra prestigious international award for advancing the sport and bringing goodwill to mankind. You know like on the scale of the Nobel Peace Prize or something. You facilitate such a unique access and vantage point to both Maui and windsurfing, which is the stuff dreams are made of …for most people. When I think about sailing at Sprecks with you, both of us on a wave face, it felt like I was in the R.I.P. video (something I’ve watched 100 times). And then since returning home, I’ve watched countless videos by you of you on Vimeo, etc. Apparently, you’ve done this for a lot of people for a very long time!! Anyway, so thank you!
After 20 years of windsurfing, I finally came to Maui to try wave sailing for the 1st time and wanted a guided introduction. Couldn’t have chosen better than Matt. He found us great accommodation, and provided state of the art gear delivered personally to our front door. On the water, he provided invaluable helmet cam video, technique advice and was very patient. Matt skills are phenomenal, he sails in the waves, looking backwards at you for helmet cam footage, and one handed so he can point to exactly where you should be to pick up your first wave, which for me, was a thrill of lifetime. Plus, his t-shirts are the best …
I had a great time out there with you and now I have a real foundation to build on. Your videos are great. I have gone through them a couple times now and keep hearing your instruction and playing it through my head. Once I get that motion picture playing up there it carries on into jibes and wave jumping. (-:
I took a lesson with Matt. Best move ever! Things were clearly explained. The coaching tips were useful, and the thumb drive of me windsurfing was helpful and fun. I now have a video of myself sailing a nice wave at Lowers! That alone was worth every penny. After the lesson I made more tacks and jibes in one day than I had in my life before then. Highly recommend Matt.
